Happy New Year and welcome to 2017, Luxury LA Homes readers. While the Holidays are finally over, it’s still a busy time of year for home burglary. So, we’re going to start the year off talking about how to keep your home as safe as possible, especially if it’s listed for sale.

  1. Maintain Your Property. Your number one priority should be to project that your home is always occupied. So, clean up fallen debris in a timely manner, keep the walkways and driveways clear and get rid of holiday decorations.
  2. Asses Your Home’s Vulnerability. Don’t forget to perform this simply exercise, walk to the curb and ask “How would I get in if I were locked out?” This is most likely where a thief will try first.
  3. Respect the Power of Lighting. Invest in nighttime light automation and motion detectors. Technology has made these both cheap and easy to setup.
  4. Use Technology to Make Your Home Look Occupied. Remote systems can no easily control lighting, music and other appliances to make it look like you’re home, even when you’re not.
  5. Yes, it Has to Be Said: Lock Your Doors. This happens way more often than you’d think. 30% of burglaries are committed by criminals accessing the home through an unlocked door or window.
  6. Reinforce Your Locks. A solid door frame, door jam and strike plate are just as, if not more important than good locks.
  7. Blare the Sirens. While they may annoy the neighbors, external sirens are invaluable to preventing burglaries. Even without an alarm, it’s not a bad idea to invest in fake security signs and post them new doors.
