Development Update: Condos and Apartments on the Rise in Beverly Hills and Century City

Real estate continues to rise in the Beverly Hills and Century City area. This time we mean that literally. We’ve already covered Richard Meier’s 9900 Wilshire Blvd project in our in depth look at what effect international investors are having on the LA market. Let’s take a look at three more projects currently building or breaking ground.

At 10000 Santa Monica Blvd developer Crescent Heights has already moved in the cranes to begin a two year build. Once completed the $300 million residential tower will have 238 luxury apartments, with a condo conversion plan already in place if the sales market permits.

At 483 feet, the project is the second tallest building currently under construction in LA. Its sloping roof and and jagged angles will provide the rectangular Century City skyline with some much needed architectural flair.

Only a few blocks west at 1801 Avenue of the Stars, demolition is underway for Welton Becket’s 1963 modernist landmark. In its place will be a greatly expanded Westfield Century City shopping mall, slated to include a Nordstroms and over 400,000 square feet of additional shopping and strolling areas. Foodies can rejoice too, as plans include LA’s first Eataly marketplace and restaurant.

The residential aspect of the Westfield Century City’s expansion seems to still be under debate. As of now, the developers are only including 20 upscale residences, a major downgrade from the controversial 39-story tower that was to feature 262 condominiums.

Lastly we have the $200 million Waldorf Astoria at the intersection of Wilshire and Santa Monica, and within a stone’s throw of the iconic Beverly Hilton. Demolition is now largely complete and the hotel is on schedule for a 2017 opening. This will be the first new build ever on the West Coast for the famed hotel brand.

The 12 story tower will house 170 guest rooms and luxury retail space. Design team Gensler and Pierre-Yves Rochon have included curved white stone and bronze elements to pay homage to the Golden Age of Los Angeles. Like the W in Hollywood, plans may include condos, which owners can have the hotel rent out when not in use.
